Report from WFF 2024

A delegation of CSAYN comprising of African youth attended the 2024 World Food Forum in Rome, Italy, held at the FAO headquarters. This influential gathering brought together policymakers, researchers, activists, youth leaders, and other stakeholders from around the world, all committed to advancing food security, sustainability, and climate resilience within the global food system.

The theme of this year’s forum was, “Food Security for All: Unveiling the True Cost of Food,” emphasized the importance of acknowledging and addressing the hidden costs associated with food production and consumption, including environmental degradation, health impacts, and social inequalities. Discussions were anchored in the concept of “true cost accounting,” which assesses the economic, environmental, and social costs embedded in our food systems.

Throughout the forum, they engaged in insightful sessions and panels that explored innovative solutions for these challenges. Notably, the forum highlighted the need for equitable food systems that are climate-smart, environmentally sustainable, and resilient to future shocks. There were profound presentations and exchanges on regenerative agriculture, circular economy models, and the reduction of food loss and waste, all geared towards creating sustainable pathways for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of the most impactful takeaways for young delegates was the vital role that youth can play in transforming food systems. The forum underscored the importance of empowering young people to innovate, advocate, and lead in Agrifood Systems. This event offered an invaluable platform for networking, exchanging ideas, and envisioning collaborative projects with like-minded individuals from across the globe.

Representing the Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network Global (GCSAYN) they are excited to bring back insights and strategies from the forum to further strengthen our initiatives on food security and climate action, sharing these perspectives with other young leaders and driving change within our communities.
