ICT for Agriculture

The role of ICT to enhance food security and support rural livelihoods is increasingly being recognized. (ICTs) in agriculture have the potential to increase the efficiency, productivity and sustainability agriculture by providing information and knowledge sharing. In this paper, we seek to illustrate the contribution of ICT to food security and sustainable agriculture in developing countries. We argue that developing solution architecture (e-agriculture framework) to expose farmers to the much needed agricultural information (i.e., preharvest and postharvest information, pricing, weather conditions etc) can boost agricultural productivity. CSAYN’s ICT & Agriculture thematic area plans to explore how such frameworks can accommodate the dynamic trends in ICT tools, applications, adoption and usage by youth. Further, we illustrate the development of such a framework to address these aforementioned properties to improve agricultural productivity within the context of youth.

Some of the questions CSAYN seeks to address within this thematic area include:

  • How can youth explore applications of ICT to make a difference in agriculture livelihoods?
  • How can CSAYN link youth in the ICT sector to solve agricultural challenges and enhance its value chain?
  • How can CSAYN stir such innovative business thinking and models (i.e by linking ICT with Agriculture) – Addressing how youth making efforts in ICT-Agriculture to come with ideas and turn them into sustainable business models?
  • What are some very easy yet innovative ICT tools and business models we can consider to make agriculture more youth/business friendly? Consider case studie: E.g Farm Drive – We could also feature some of our farmers who have implemented innovative technologies in their activities.

Can ICT be used in mitigating climate change? If yes, how so?
